It’s official. We now have bookend female evening news anchors with the announcement of Diane Sawyer’s new post at World News Tonight on ABC. Charles Gibson is retiring and Ms. Sawyer can now sleep in as well as step into one of the most prestigious posts a journalist can nab. Swing on that brass ring, Diane. Her friend Katie Couric became the first female evening news anchor at CBS.
Why does all this matter? Simple. It makes the path a whole helluva lot easier when someone has paved the way for us. Aspiring journalists in school right now can look at Sawyer and Couric’s achievement and go – hey, I can do that. Damn straight you can.
Our Mimosa Toast to Diane Sawyer!
