Of Bunnies & Books: April Top Picks

April 5th, 2010

After our brief holiday hiatus we are back and excited to talk about books! Our April Top Picks beautifully represent what CHANGE is all about. These four picks couldn’t be more different, but the one thing they have in common is how entertaining they are. I hope you’ll let me know what you like and what you plan to read. You can click on the covers in the sidebar to find out more about them on Amazon and, of course, all month long here on Book End Babes.

P.S. Pass the Reeses Bunny.

Why we picked these:

THE MEMORIST by M.J. Rose: A reincarnation thrill ride. Rose is on a roll.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: My Year in a Women’s Prison by Piper Kerman. I don’t want to go to there so I’m happy to experience it through Piper’s re-telling.

A LOST WIFE’S TALE by Marion McGilvary. I know last month we had “A Wife’s Tale” but we swear we aren’t picking based on titles. This one is about a woman who becomes a maid to hide her secret identity and the writing is gorgeous.

CHANGELESS by Gail Carriger. If the author’s name rings a bell, it’s because her first book in the series, SOULLESS, was a top HoLITday pick, and this installment is even more fun that the first. The fantasy is oh-so-refreshing.

Buy+Brown Day

September 15th, 2009

mj-roseToday our atta-babe goes to MJ Rose, suspense author and book marketing brainchild behind AuthorBuzz and other book marketing programs, with yet another killer idea for promoting reading and book buying: it’s called.
buy+Brown.
Brown as in THE Dan Brown, whose new blockbuster book hits the shelves today.
It’s easy! You’re already in the bookstore picking up Dan Brown’s book but you DON’T STOP THERE. You buy ONE MORE (preferably non-Dan Brown book!)
It’s brilliant!
And, heck, if you weren’t going to buy Dan Brown’s book, go into the bookstore anyway and buy two books. Win, win!

Buy Books for Christmas – the Campaigns

November 14th, 2008

It’s no secret that retailers are scrambling for the precious (fewer) holiday dollars. While flat screen TVs and larger ticket items may have to wait until next year, the book industry and those who love it, are hoping people will remember books make great gifts. Here are several campaigns to get that message across:

Authorbuzz.com, operated by MJ Rose is creating a holiday campaign to run for a month, starting right after Thanksgiving, that will “deliver a half a billion impressions across some of the most popular blogs and reach over 10 million people.

Book bloggers are promoting books as gifts, too, including  buybooksfortheholidays.com with book recommendations in all age ranges and genres, and a unique pledge to buy books as gifts.

And of course my husband and I are getting in on the act, too! Athena’s Bookshelf and Bookgasm.com are co-sponsoring Jingle Book Rock, he ultimate holiday book party on Facebook. The fan site is for authors to promote their 2008 releases and readers to learn more about their titles and have a chance to win free books on Dec. 15th, simply by “fanning” the site. Each week I’ll give you an update about the books featured on the site. Come see what all the buzz is about!

It makes perfect sense for a publishing house to do a huge push for the holidays, and I’m surprised they don’t ALL do it, but biggie Random House is doing it up big with their “books=gifts” campaign that will run in a range of consumer publications such as the New York Times Book Review and the New Yorker , web site promotion, ads on Facebook and YouTube and in e-mail blasts to various lists.

Authors including Bill O’Reilly, Dan Brown, Deepak Chopra and Chris Paolini will be part of the campaign. Dean Koontz will say, “Books make great gifts because your friends and family need something thrilling to read other than their 401(k) report.” Maya Angelou’s message is: “Books make great gifts because they’re a celebration of family and friendship.”

Which books do YOU want Santa to stuff in your stocking?

Which books will you be GIFTING this year?
