From the publisher:

4006381331_e431ceba43_mWhen a debut author is instantly adored by industry leaders like Eloisa James, you know you’ve got something special. Even The Romantic Times advises, “Once you start, you won’t want to put it down.”

Lady Calpurnia Hartwell has always considered herself a shy, plain, spinster–until one day she becomes completely fed up with her boring life of discontent. If she can’t have a man of her own, what’s the use in sustaining a pristine reputation? Callie makes a list (of nine things a proper lady would never be caught dead doing) and vows to accomplish them all!

From drinking scotch and smoking cheroot, to attending a duel and dancing every dance at a ball–Callie is on a quest to bring adventure into her life. Seized by her newfound appetite for thrills, Callie chooses the most nerve-wracking task as her first: Kiss someone, passionately.

As MacLean expertly weaves a series of surprising twists and turns, Callie’s transformation from passive, old maid to confident, feisty woman takes shape. Readers will be swept into her journey of self discovery, rooting for Callie with all of their hearts.

A Lady of Persuasion

by Kathy L Wheeler, BEbabes Romance Reviewer

39674507.JPGA Lady of Persuasion by Tessa Dare

First line: Sir Tobias Aldridge was contemplating an act of coldblooded murder.

The third book by this brilliant new author is a glittering historical jewel.

The hero is one helluva charmer. The women fall at his feet. Unfortunately, the beauty he was betrothed to ran away only to end up marrying a Privateer of the crown (Book two Surrender of a Siren).

In this story, the Privateer is partnering another young woman at a haut ton ball. Toby (our hero), rather than murdering the Privateer, decides to steal her away, instead. But, ahem, it’s his sister. Even better! He proposes marriage—she accepts, to her brothers’ dismay.

Isabel (our heroine), is very faith driven. Her charity works identify her persona. She sets out to find a marriageable man who will further her charitable efforts. A man with political aspirations to help her become A Lady of Much Influence.

Toby decides he will be that man, or at least pretend until he’s capitulated Isabel to the alter. She is not swayed by the normal means, however. No dice, because the sugar was probably harvested by slaves. Eating little because servants are treated unfairly, she is not turned by flirty phrases, nor she doesn’t understand teasing. Too serious, by far.

Toby is determined to find way into her heart—not by charm. She is certainly a challenge. So he tells her he is running for Parliament. Against an old family friend, no less. But on his wedding day he and the family friend strike a deal for Toby to lose. Of course, Isabel would be none the wiser. Well, you get the picture. It’s a disaster.

I must admit my surprise in Isabel’s character. The underlying reasons behind her devotion to her faith and charity-driven obsessions are subtley drawn, but compelling, all the same. The same with Toby. What could he possibly have to be insecure about when women throw themselves at him? But he is, and in this he reaches our hearts.

The depth and characterization in this and Ms. Dare’s two previous books are just…well—insightful. The individuals are true to form and follow through in all three stories. She does an excellent job with verbal sparring and drawing pictures in your head.

My recommendation is to read all three. You would not have to read them in order, but you will learn to love them all from beginning to end.

Excellent job, Ms. Dare.

GCC Tour: Carolyn Jewel

Our next Girlfriends Cyber Circuit Tour features Carolyn Jewel, author of Berkley Sensation’s SCANDAL, in stores now!

The A/B Interview:

If Oprah invited you on her show to talk about your book, what would
the theme of that show be?

Introverts and how to get them to talk. Or, alternatively, Opinionated
People and How to Get them to Shut up. Because once I get going…

2. What was the most fun scene in your book to write? The most difficult?
I don’t mean to sound like a freak, but I don’t have much fun writing. I
get intense personal satisfaction from the process, particularly when I
am editing rather than drafting, but so far I would never in a million
years describe any part of writing as fun, ever. All scenes are
difficult for me. Apparently, I need to learn your process, because you
wouldn’t ask the question if you didn’t have fun. So spill!

Carolyn, Ooh, yes first drafts are the most fun part for me. The idea, the imagination, the creation of these wonderful characters and world I’m building for them. But then again, I think branding businesses is “fun”, too so maybe it’s the whole Maybelline thing – maybe you’re born with it, maybe it’s Maybelline. -ML

3. Do you have a muse, good luck charm, writing vice?
No muse. No good luck charm. (Rats!) And many many vices. The worst is
deluding myself that a boring scene can be edited out of it’s
boring-ness when really I just need to delete it and start over.

4. What do you write on (type of computer, or notebook, etc.) and where
do you write?

I’m at the gym at 5:00 am M-F where I ride an exercise bike and
brainstorm with pen and notebook for 45 minutes. Then at various points
in the day, depending on my level of deadline neurosis, I write on my
laptop in the car at lunch, at my son’s soccer practices or before his
games, and at home on my iMac when I am not attending to family matters.
When I am reading through paper-copy of my work in progress, I stick it
in a binder and take it with me to the gym or the car or wherever. As
soon as I have the money I intend to replace my PC laptop with a Macbook.

Here, here on the Macbook. Just don’t let a child swing around in a chair and knock it off the desk causing the screen to split like I did. Makes working on it tons less fun. :-(

5. Have you had a “rock star” moment regarding your writing
career? If so, what was it?

I was at a party at the neighbor’s once and there was a young woman
there who’d had too much to drink. She was convinced I had written a
book she absolutely LOVED to PIECES. The GREATEST book EVAH!!
Unfortunately, the book she described was not one I had ever written.
She refused to believe I was not the author of this much beloved book,
so at last, I just nodded and said thanks so much.

6. What do you do to celebrate your writing successes?
I get a massage and a facial. And I pony up for the 1.5 hour massage and
facial for a combined three hours of pure bliss.

Love that idea. I’ll have to try that next time.

7. Describe your personality with five adjectives that would make your
5th grade English teacher proud.

Adjectives are, of course, the devil, second only to abverbs or maybe
gerunds, but if you insist: driven, neurotic, focused, opinionated and
introverted. I’m not sure anyone would be proud of those.

Opinionated and inverted in the same person? Bet you keep your opinions to yourself in the elevator and in line at the post office then. Thanks so much for sharing, Carolyn, and best of luck on SCANDAL!

This unconventional and intelligent woman proves to be far more than an amusing distraction– she threatens to drive him to distraction. Unlike the women who usually fall at Banallt’s feet, and into his bed, Sophie refuses to be seduced. And soon Banallt desires her more than ever– and for more than an illicit affair.

Years later, the widowed Sophie is free, and Banallt is determined to win the woman he still loves. Unfortunately, she doesn’t believe his declaration of love and chivalrous offer of marriage– her heart has already been broken by her scoundrel of a husband. And yet, Sophie is tempted to indulge in the torrid affair she’s always fantasized about. Caught between her logical mind and her long-denied desire, Sophie must thwart Banallt’s seduction– or risk being consumed by the one man she should avoid at all costs…

Running Hot

Running Hot by Jayne Ann Krentz

First line:  Martin was going to kill her.

Running Hot is Jayne Ann Krentz’s new Arcane Society novel.  If you’ve read any of her Jayne Castle novels, even some of her Amanda Quick novels, then you know of the paranormal twist that she carries throughout several centuries.

Krentz’ books are among my favorite.  In this story, the heroine is a butler who realizes her boss is about to kill her.  And due to a new drug he should be able to do it without touching her.  Unfortunately for the villain, it backfires – literally.  Like the ricochet of a bullet, killing him instead.

The hero is an ex-cop hired by the psychic Agency to look out for her while she conducts a psychic profile.  That’s her specialty – Psychic Profiling.  His specialty is manipulating a person’s stress level and getting persons to talk.  Making them want to talk.  A leak high is suspected extremely high up in the hierarchy of the Agency.  When the leak is discovered to be one of their own, and yet murders still happen, the twist becomes extremely interesting due to how the murders are conducted.  (Let’s just say I won’t spoil the fun by telling you how.)

For:  Readers who want a fast paced, action pact story with a paranormal twist that is not so bloody, gory.  -Kathy Wheeler
